Fox Creek Mountain Bike Park Trail Extension

Submitted by Brad Slade File

With our “Fund My Idea” grant we would continue the development of mountain bike trails and facilities in the “Fox Creek MTB Park”. The new trails and facilities are targeted toward developing skills for intermediate (12 to 18 yrs) riders while reducing the need for them to ride on road or non-sanctioned riding areas. The “Fox Creek MTB Park” is located in the “Cudlee Creek Forest”, which lies a short distance from Lobethal and Lenswood.

We, the "Human Projectiles" (Human Projectile MTB Club Inc.), have been working to improve and develop mountain bike facilities in this area since 2004. We have worked with BikeSA, ForestrySA, other mountain bike groups and local businesses to successfully deliver a variety of projects. Our focus is on delivering mountain bike facilities for families and beginners as well as advanced riders. An intermediated trail would be used by the broader mountain biking and recreational community and allow beginners of all ages to develop skills while enjoying the outdoor environment. Bench setting and an adventure play ground will also offer recreational options for family members who do not wish to ride. Mountain Bike parks are an internationally proven drawcard for local and international tourists. They provide important physical and mental health benefits to users and benefit the local economy.

Problem you're solving

The Fox Creek MTB Park trail network currently attracts more than 15,000 riders/year and is recognized as one of the premier mountain bike facilities in South Australia. ForestrySA and BikeSA have developed a strategic plan for the park and anticipate that the number of riders and walkers will increase substantially as the facilities improve over time. International, interstate and South Australian visitors all bring financial and employment benefits to the Adelaide Hills region, local businesses have also noticed an increase in trade in recent times.

A number of mountain bike events are held in this forest throughout the year for Downhill, Cross Country and Enduro disciplines which attract riders from all over South Australia and Australia, the intermediate trail development will encourage family participation at these events as well providing a trail that could be used by families 7 days a week.

The Human Projectiles also believe as do BikeSA and ForestrySA that the Intermediate Trail, along with the recently built trails will attract a much larger and broader cross section of mountain bike riders to the state and Adelaide Hills region and overseas tourists who wish to experience the foods and wines of the region as well as world class mountain biking facilities.

Your solution

As with other project work we have performed at Fox Creek we will:
• Establish a working party with BikeSA, ForestrySA and local businesses.
• Project Management will be performed by the working party
• Engage a local contractor to perform the trail design approx. $1500
• Engage a local machinery hire company to provide equipment for trail construction approx. $4500
• Engage a local professional trail builder to construct the trail approx. $4500, the Human Projectile’s will also contribute a considerable amount of time trail construction
• The working party will develop a plan for the development of signage and promotion
• Local firms will be used to construct the signage - $5000 to enhance and promote these facilities for local, interstate and international use, signage is crucial to the promotion of the MTB park.
• Signage will be installed by the Human Projectiles
• Promotional material will be developed by the working group $2000
• Tables and benches will be purchased and installed by the Human Projectiles $1500

Cost estimates are based on the current work we have for the Fox Creek Children's/Beginners trail which is under construction

I would love to see more development of the fox creek entry level trails, to encourage more people to get out side and exercise . It great way to get fit and have fun. I regularly travel from Hallett Cove with friends to ride there and we always stop at local bakery for coffee and cakes .

Great idea. I've done some volunteer trail building up there...if the place had a few family-friendly facilities and some further trail development it'd be great...and offer more pathways for skills progression. New Zealand has developed a great model (and cracked the insurance issue that seems to paralyse Australia) ...and now has so many world-class MTB facilities...

No (real) reason we couldn't do the same...if not better than those plucky kiwis...

Fox can easily accommodate more trails and having a different trail purpose/focus will add to the appeal of it. Might get a few more bums off couches and onto bikes too!

Bike riding=healthy exercise, bringing families together and having fun (and makes for a happy wife)! If my husband has a free minute he goes straight to Fox Creek to go for a ride. I soon realised I had to take up bike riding so I could spend some time with him. We now have two young children who are bike enthusiasts and we spend our bike ride wishing they were up there with us........but there is not much we can do there as a family. Please make Fox creek a family fun place.
I am often telling Adelaide people about Fox creek because they haven't heard of it, and I believe this is because presently it doesn't cater for families. Give families a reason to be outdoors together and bring extra business to Anderson Hill Winery and other businesses in the hills. To end with my 4 year old son said "please make it fun for me it's really tricky and I can't ride up the really steep hills and I have to sit down lots and I wish there was a playground for me because daddy's too fast. From Fletcher."

My mates and I have been riding these trails for many years and the addition of the new trails is greatly appreciated. So much fun!
Interstate and international friends cant believe the trails we have access to in the Adelaide Hills but supporting infrastructure that would encourage people other than the hard core riders is often non existent. Maps and facilities that enable access for families and more social groups get my vote. My kids are just starting to get into trail riding but would find many of the existing trails at fox daunting. Any new facilities will definitely bring people into the area.

Having recently come back from Queenstown and seen how the local councils have embraced downhill parks and are taking the lead with supporting the sport, tourism has boomed so much so it is close the the numbers they are getting in the ski season. Common south Australia get behind this. Local councils please take a look at queens town NZ and learn from them this is a winner.!!!!

Guys. Fox creek trails ROCK. Fantastically designed and constructed to allow most of them to be taken slow and carefully, but then provide real challenge for more experienced (or courageous) riders. Would be great to have more options for the kids. Looking forward to them being old enough to try them out. Like Fish. I have a spade, and would love to help this project.

I taught my young daughter to ride offroad at Fox Creek, and as her skills expand there's always a variety of excellent tracks to suit her skills. It is a world class MTB destination, and an expansion would only increase the draw.

fox creek is brilliant, and can only get better as we get more trails for all the different riders that head there - family green trails, xc trails, trail runs and gnarly downhill. I fully support expanding the network.

The SA Mountain Bike Association (SAMBA) support this project and offer any support that we can provide. The Human Projectiles are excellent ambassadors for Mountain Biking i nSouth Australia and we can be sure that the outcomes of this project will represent far greater value than the outlay involved. Well done.

The State Government made an election commitment on March 10 2014 in a Jay4SA news release to 'Establish the Mount Lofty Ranges as an International Mountain Bike Destination'. This project, among others, will contribute to realising this vision.

I think different trail options are a great idea for the more novice and younger riders aiming to build confidence and fitness to tackle the tougher trails! A place for my mrs to sit and play with my young child until she is old enough to hit the trails with her "old man" is a brilliant idea also!

Fox creek is the jewel in the crown of Adelaide Hills mountain biking. This area has the ability to be world class and draw people into the hills region. The Human Projectiles have shown great initiative in developing the existing track structures. Their motivation and imagination benefits us all. To all involved, good luck in the grant process.

Fox Creek is the jewel in South Australia's MTB destinations, the trails are second to none thanks to all the years of work by many dedicated volunteers. The Human Projectiles, Mr Bowman and many others have done great things to expand this in the past few years. The proposed expansion to include families and attract the next generation of young MTBers is paramount to bring visitors and tourism to the area.

being new to MTB riding and around Fox a number of times it is a brilliant place from beginner to elite racer expanding it with more options for every one will be worth it, also open it up for a chance to hold UCI sanctioned world class MTB events here in SA

Fox Creek Mountain Bike Park Trail Extension; gets my vote because it is such a wonderful place for the young and old to enjoy the outdoors. Takes people off the streets and into nature where they can enjoy their sport with relative safety. My two junior boys often enjoy this facility with their caring aunt & uncle. Great place and there needs to be more places like this available to urban dwellers. Cheers.

Hi. This is a awesome proposal and will be a huge asset to mountian biking in South Australia. The tracks that the Human Projectiles have made are top notch! Being from Quenstown NZ, there is also a knock on effect from having a world class mountian bike park with tourism. Rotorua has taped into this market and keeps growing.
Human Projectiles, keep up the good work. If you ever need a hand give me a call.
Cheers guys.

I've ridden bike parks around the world (Europe, Asia pacific, North America) and so many places in Australia claim to be 'world class'. Sadly the vast majority are not however i honestly believe that Fox Creek has the potential to be up there with the best of them. The trails there right now are great, very similar to what Rotorua NZ has to offer. If they expanded the area then i have no doubt it would do the same for the surrounding villages as what the forest park trails in Roto have done for the town.

What a fantastic idea. I ride and often deposit my other family members at Andersens Hill Winery whilst we ride.
This idea will expand my family involvement, spreading the joy and getting my kids out of the house.
Brilliant.. as i think SA needs to re-align its tourism toward MTB and Cycling in general and capitalise on our amazing environment, making SA the go-to destination for riding.

Some of the best trails in Adelaide at the Fox Creek mountain bike park and human projectiles have played a big part in this. If the govt. want to make Adelaide the place to come for mountain biking then continuation of the trail development in this area will go a long way in helping that cause.

28 Oct 2014

Great to see that the beginner mountain bike rider is being catered for. This opens up the region to tourism with whole families able to be involved in mountain biking experienced to novel riders. It will be a great way of increasing weekenders in the hills and help all the eateries in the hills.
Recently we were involved in the Masters games in Alice Springs having a number of bike paths around one area improves the experience. I can see these tracks creating the hub of the mountain bike events such as the masters games and it will give the whole area the tourism boost it needs.

Its great to see the human projectiles getting involved with track making and design.
This group has had the privilege of riding this this area for many years. right back when there were only fire tracks to ride. This shows me that this is a group of motivated people who enjoy an active, creative and hard working life style, keep the good work up and good luck with your endeavours. Regards Bob

I ride at Fox but have to leave the kids and wife at home because there is nothing for them to do. An easier trail, some seating and a playground would turn my selfish ride into a quality family outing. The existing Fox Creek trails are arguably the best in the state and demonstrate the skill and effort of the builders. I really hope this proposal gets the nod.

SA is well on the way of becoming a hub for mountain bikers. The developements in the fox creek aerea are second to none. Those trails are suitable for families and all age groups. A few more trails ensure that users are happy to spend many hours riding on designated and environmentally sustainable trails rather than clogging roads or riding on badly designed off road trails.
Please don't stop here...

building this infrastructure with potential for use by anyone, 365 days/ year, is outstanding value. As a regular user of the greater trail network within the forest, and two children soon to be old enough to use these facilities, connect with nature, exercise, etc. I am certain many others would also benefit equally.

28 Oct 2014

This is a terrific idea and I have no doubt the Projectile's have the skills, experience and passion to make it a success. Our family rides at Fox Creek every now and then and we'll often have lunch at Anderson Hill Winery or the Cudlee Creek Cafe while we're there. The addition of some easier and less "hilly" trails would be a great investment in the area and would undoubtedly help other families get out and spend more time together.

A fantastic project for this area and I look forward to using the park for some action packed fun and challenging adventures with good mates.
