In line with much of the feedback received, the South Australian Government has introduced legislation into Parliament to establish an Adult Safeguarding Unit in South Australia with statutory responsibility and accountability for responding to reports of actual or suspected abuse of vulnerable adults.

A key focus of the Unit will be on raising awareness through community education. However, when a report of abuse is received, the Unit will have the power to investigate and coordinate a multi-agency response to safeguard and support the vulnerable adult.

Subject to the passage of the legislation through Parliament, it is expected that the Unit will be operational by mid-2019.
