You can share your ideas to help shape a new Numeracy and Literacy (Birth to 18) Strategy.  This will help us support preschools, schools and families to improve these foundational skills for children and young people.

Recently we brought together education, family and child development services within one government department. The new Department of Education and Child Development is now combining its efforts to strengthen and improve numeracy and literacy; skills that are fundamental for successful learning and life.  To do this, we have a stronger focus on early intervention and engaging with parent and families.

We would like your ideas to help us develop innovative and sustainable approaches to improve children's learning.

This paper outlines the proposed strategy and invites your views and suggestions (Download pdf 2.2 MB).

After the community discussion and contributions, the new Numeracy and Literacy Strategy will be progressively introduced in preschools, schools and the wider community from the 2013 school year.
