The Tennyson Dunes became a dedicated conservation reserve under the SA Crown Lands Act in September 2015.

The Tennyson Dunes Working Group was appointed by the Minister for Sustainability, Environment and Conservation in 2016 to help the Department for Environment and Water manage the Tennyson Dunes Conservation Reserve by providing advice, input and feedback on management matters. Membership of the group includes Kaurna, Department for Environment and Water, City of Charles Sturt and Tennyson Dunes Group representatives.

The draft management plan for Wara Wayingga-Tennyson Dunes Conservation Reserve was prepared by the Tennyson Dunes Working Group and Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges to proactively manage ecosystem biodiversity and the conservation status of the reserve. It was informed by existing action plans including the Tennyson Dunes Biodiversity Action Plan and the Vegetation Management Plan, Tennyson Dune Reserve.
