Project details

Who will benefit from this project?

How will the funding be spent?

This bid is for the purchase of slip resistant, portable and temporary beach mat for Port Pirie community beach. The funding will be used to purchase around 60 metres of beach mat, cut into manageable lengths. The beach mat trolley is designed specifically to allow the mat to be rolled up each day, minimising risk of vandalism. The bid also includes a suitable, secure storage container and transport to Port Pirie.

How will the project be delivered?

Red Cross will manage and promote the provision of the beach mat, using their social support volunteers, with the full support of the local council. The beach mat will be located in a conveniently located container and be rolled out and supervised once a week, or more if the demand increases. The mat will be secured when not in use in a locked container. Community organisations such as SCOSCA, Helping Hand, Bedford, Orana and aged care providers support and will promote the program.

How many people will directly benefit from this project?

How will you measure the impact of this project?

Number of people and type of mobility issue for people using the mat
Purpose or increased time demand for use
Feedback from users and from community service providers

How will the project fit this year's theme of ‘Connect, Grow, Build, Belong’?

Missing out on fundamental life experiences is a basic right we can correct for people with mobility issues who live in Port Pirie. By providing access to the water, people with a disability/mobility issue will be able to be included in activities with their family & friends, and enjoy the simple health and wellbeing benefits of a day at the beach and paddle in seawater. In this regional community, this will offer a non-expensive outing to enrich their lives and support their inclusion.

What a great Idea. It will help tourism into the area because it will make it attractive to people with disabilities. It will also enlighten others to the difficulties for those who have disabilities.

An excellent way to manage the use of a beach mat by having a group of supportive volunteers checking on the use and storage of the mat.
I have witnessed the beach mat trials at Henley Beach and Semaphore , so I know how great the need for these mats are to comunities.
