Anti-Racism Education

Education programs for young people and health professionals to end racism

How will the funding be spent?

We are concerned by the growth of racism in Australia, especially an increase in Islamophobia and discrimination of Aboriginal Australians. 1 in 5 kids experience racism every day at school. 1 in 3 adults experience racism in the workplace. We want to change that. Because education is the most powerful tool to combat racism, we will provide education for young people where it has the most long term impact, and training for staff in healthcare settings where people face the greatest disadvantage.

How will the project be delivered?

We will employ a team of facilitators to 1) Increase the reach of our award-winning program ‘Responding to Racism’ 2) Create a new program for 5-12 year olds that supports them to reduce bullying, develop cultural understanding and promote harmony 3) Customise the training for healthcare settings to support Aboriginal people to access services safely and help close the gap in life expectancy. These programs are needed to stop the rise of racism and create safety for all Australians.

How many people will directly benefit from this project?

Over 2,000 people will participate in the training. They will develop skills to prevent racism in their schools and workplaces, creating a far greater reach.

How will you measure the impact of this project?

The impact of this program will be measured by the number of participants and post-training evaluation of their views, such as;

•Understanding of racism and the effect it has
•Understanding of different cultures
•Developing strategies to respond to racism when it happens
•Developing strategies to prevent racism in their communities

We will also run focus groups with educators, parents and key stakeholders.

How will the project fit this year's theme of ‘Connect, Grow, Build, Belong’?

This project is about the kind of society we want to build, a society which is safe for people regardless of their race, religion or where they are from. It builds on our past work with ActNow in developing an award winning training workshop ‘Responding to Racism’ which has been presented in high schools. We will grow the program by developing new version for both 5-12 year olds and also customise it for Healthcare facilities to make a change where it’s needed the most.

I'm really excited that people are finally saying that racism is NOT OK!

I've worked across a range of communities and social justice campaigns and I can say this is such an important issue. Kens comments here highlight the need for anti-racism education and why this project is so important. His attitude is not uncommon - in fact 1 in 10 Australians are "highly Islamophobic" according to recent study by University of South Australia. Muslims experience discrimination at three times the rate of other Australians. We all agree that we need to reject violence and intolerance, which is why we need projects like this that enable dialogue and build a harmonious, peaceful society that embraces multiculturalism.

Any serious attempt to address Islamophobia,
must not ignore the real roots of Islamophobia.

FACT - Islam incites hatred(1) and violence(2) toward non-Muslims.
It is not Islamophobic to reject religious hatred(1) and violence(2) directed towards oneself or others.

Islamic teachings are demonstrably antithetical to Australian values [refer (1) &(2) below] and only wilful ignorance can deny that reality.

Islamophobia is merely a symptom of the problem of Islamic doctrinal hatred(1) for all things non-Muslim.

Yes, you can shut down criticism but you can't change the facts:
