Background
Where is the park located?
The southern entrance to the national park is located 30 minutes north of Adelaide. The park covers 14,633 hectares, stretching along a strip of coastline between St Kilda and Parham.
The park forms the core conservation area of the broader Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary, which extends beyond the park's boundaries.
Why is this park significant?
The park is a safe haven for tens of thousands of migratory shorebirds and is recognised as globally significant for shorebirds that use the world's biggest flyway, the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
To the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of the Bird Sanctuary’s lands and waters, the region is an interconnected landscape of profound cultural significance.
Wetlands, mangroves, samphire and saltmarsh plant communities, coastal dune systems and mud flats form a mosaic of ecologically unique habitat.
With its diverse coastal ecology and rich cultural history, this area has the potential to bring people together to strengthen local economies through nature-based tourism opportunities, delivering positive outcomes for people, the economy and the environment.
Conservation of this precious landscape, in parallel with creating learning opportunities for locals and visitors, is a cornerstone of the Bird Sanctuary and the national park’s management plan.
