Department for Education Draft Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2024-2027
The Department for Education would like your input to help us shape our draft Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2024-2027.
What's being decided?
The Department for Education (the department) is seeking community feedback on our first Suicide Prevention Action Plan (Action Plan).
Suicide has a significant impact on our people, reflecting its impact on the broader South Australian community.
We want to ensure our draft Action Plan is comprehensive and effective, building on the department’s current responses to suicide prevention.
We encourage people with lived experience of suicide to provide feedback. This includes people who have experienced suicidal thought, survived a suicide attempt, cared for someone through a suicidal crisis, been bereaved by suicide or having a loved one who has died by suicide.
Your feedback will be considered and used to inform the final Suicide Prevention Action Plan.
Background
The department is one of ten government departments required to develop a Suicide Prevention Action Plan under the Suicide Prevention Act 2021 (SA) (the Act). Our Action Plan must support delivery of the South Australian Suicide Prevention Plan 2023-2026 and explain how we will reduce suicide for our employees and members of the community who engage with the department.
Our community reaches across 900 public schools, preschools and children’s centres supporting over 180,000 students and interacts with an indeterminate number of parents, carers and families. Over 30,000 employees and approximately 30,000 volunteers work across all areas of South Australia.
The draft Action Plan supports the department’s current strategic priorities including:
Our vision for suicide prevention is a department committed to fostering empathic and supportive learning environments where every learner, educator, employee and volunteer feel that their mental health and wellbeing is prioritised and supported compassionately and in a culturally responsive manner.
