What is being decided?

We are conducting a two-year review of the Food Safety Rating Scheme and we are seeking your feedback on how we can improve the operation of the Scheme.

The Food Safety Rating Scheme is an initiative by SA Health under the Food Act 2001. The voluntary scheme is commonly known as ‘Scores on Doors’ and has been used in South Australia for two years as a visual indicator to inform consumers of how well the restaurants and cafes participating in the Scheme are complying with food safety standards. The more stars awarded means a higher standard of food safety.

A business that complies with the standards is awarded 5 stars (excellent compliance), 4 stars (good compliance) or 3 stars (general compliance with the food safety standards) and a certificate which can be displayed to the general public.

SA Health is conducting a formal two-year review of the overarching principles and resource commitments for the effective operation of the Food Safety Rating Scheme.

How will your input be used to influence the decision?

Community input is being sought to measure the awareness and effectiveness of the Food Safety Rating Scheme. The Scheme will continue beyond this two-year review, and your feedback will help us shape the future of the Scheme.

A Food Safety Rating Scheme Review Report will be published on the SA Health website at the end of the financial year 2018-19.

Background

Food safety is an important aspect of public health. The food service sector (eg. restaurants and cafes) is naturally classified as high risk, with 70% of food poisoning outbreaks in South Australia attributed to these types of businesses.

Currently, 21 councils are participating in the Food Safety Rating Scheme, representing around 70% of the South Australian population.

Businesses that underperform receive education and support to improve food safety compliance.
