Background

The State Government has introduced reforms into Parliament that aim to make gift cards more consumer friendly, by providing greater flexibility and certainty for consumers who are often confused by varying rules in relation to gift card expiry dates.

All gift cards sold in South Australia (SA) will be required to have a minimum expiry period of three years. However, there will be some exceptions and in these cases, the expiry period is set by the business as per the relevant terms and conditions.

Consultation is being undertaken on the draft Regulations that outline the types of gift cards that will be exempt from the new requirements.

We are inviting interested businesses and consumers to have their say about any other types of gift cards that should be excluded from the new requirements, including the three year minimum expiry period.
