Consultation Outcome

The Parks of Kangaroo Island Fire Management Plan has now been approved.

Over 60 engagement events were held to create the draft plan. They included information sessions, workshops and meetings with community groups and landholders. During the public consultation period (Monday 26 June to Monday 7 August 2023) 85 submissions were received. A summary of these submissions is available here.

The new plan provides long-term, strategic direction for NPWS fire management on Kangaroo Island. It will guide activities in NPWS parks and reserves, setting priorities about where, how and why we need to act to reduce the risk of bushfire, and to manage the environment and cultural heritage of the island. Strategies within the plan also enable safer access for firefighters to fight bushfires.

A project team of park and fire managers and ecological experts applied the latest data to assess fire risks. They used bushfire modelling, along with insights from specialists and advice from South Australian Country Fire Service. The plan also considers local knowledge and lived experiences, which helps make it more robust.
