We want to simplify plumbers' licenses to better protect the community and provide consumers with a clearer understanding of what services a plumber is actually licensed to perform.

What we're engaging on

YourSAy hosted an earlier engagement with plumbers as part of the “Plumbers Licensing Made Easy” 90 Day project. Now that we’ve heard from plumbers, we’d like to hear from you, as consumers, about your recent plumbing experiences and your understanding or awareness of plumbers’ qualifications and capabilities.

Plumbers’ licences can be complex documents that are not generally understood by consumers. The current wording on the licenses is very technical and as a result, members of the community may not be able to determine whether a person is qualified and competent to perform specialised tasks.

Licence wording is determined by qualifications, which can change significantly over time. Reconciling different licences issued over many years becomes complicated, and can cause confusion about what a plumber can or cannot do.

This project aims to simplify plumbers licences, including:

  • simplifying licence wording
  • investigating the consolidation of multiple licences into a single licence
  • considering targeted periodic testing licencess who undertake high-risk plumbing work (e.g. hot water temperature control valves or back flow)

Have your say

The survey is for every consumer who has engaged the services of a plumber. The information gathered will assist Consumer and Business Services to better understand the needs of the community.
