Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Joint Regional Plan (Adelaide region)

Have your say on how we can work together to support the mental health and wellbeing of the community in the Adelaide metropolitan region.

What is being decided?

The Adelaide Primary Health Network and SA Health are working together to develop a Joint Regional Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan 2026 – 2031 (Joint Regional Plan).

The Joint Regional Plan is part of the State and Federal Governments’ commitment to build a mental health system that supports the priority mental health and wellbeing needs of the community.

The Joint Regional Plan for the Adelaide region will outline shared priority areas and opportunities to strengthen partnerships between State and Commonwealth funded mental health services. The Plan will help to guide the delivery of joined-up mental health care for people of all ages in the Adelaide region.

Who do we want to hear from?

We would love to hear from people with a variety of perspectives. If you live in the Adelaide region yourself, or care for someone in the region, we would love to hear from you. If you have a lived experience of mental health concerns, suicide or suicidal distress, or if you work for an organisation that provides care for people in the region, we would really value your feedback.

Background

The Towards Wellness Plan outlined how the Adelaide Primary Health Network and Local Health Networks worked together to strengthen the integration of mental health and suicide prevention services in the Adelaide region. The Towards Wellness Plan is coming to an end and this consultation aims to build on that Plan by understanding the current and emerging priority areas and factors that would help to improve access to services for people of all ages in the Adelaide region.

A note on language

This survey acknowledges that mental health and mental-ill health are terms that do not encompass the holistic nature of wellbeing that is important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Therefore, the concept of social and emotional wellbeing is referred to in recognition of the holistic nature of wellbeing and the source of resilience and protective factors against mental health challenges and suicide for Aboriginal people.

‘Mental health concerns’ refers to when there may be things affecting a person’s mental health and wellbeing that would benefit from support, but it may not be to the extent that it meets the criteria for a mental illness diagnosis. These experiences are common and likely to resolve in time with the right support but if the mental health concern persists or increase in severity, it may develop into a mental illness.

’Lived experience of mental health illness’ refers to when a person has a disorder that is diagnosed by a medical professional that significantly interferes with a person’s cognitive, functional, emotional or social experiences. Examples include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and eating disorders.

‘Lived experience of suicide’ includes experiencing suicidal thoughts, surviving a suicide attempt, supporting a loved one through a suicidal crisis or someone close to you has died by suicide.
