Visioning for the Murray Mallee Regional Plan

Consultation has concluded

We are seeking stakeholder feedback to help inform the development of a new Regional Plan for the Murray Mallee region.

What's being decided?

We are preparing a new regional plan for the Murray Mallee with the aim to shape the long-term planning vision for urban, land and housing development in this area.

The plan will specify where people will live and work, how they will move around and where they will access services. It will provide data and recommendations for managing growth and adapting to changes in our community and urban environment.

To help guide the development of this regional plan, we want to hear from you on the issues and opportunities for land use, infrastructure, and what is needed to support sustainable growth to ensure that the region’s specific planning needs are met and reflected in the plan.

You can provide feedback on the following topics:

  • the vision for the Murray Mallee region over the next 30 years
  • relevant local knowledge
  • regional priorities such as transport networks (road, rail, port, aviation), electricity, water, community infrastructure and potential areas for zoning or land use change.

Background

Regional plans play an important role in guiding sustainable growth by identifying land use and long-term infrastructure over a 15 to 30-year period. They outline where new housing and employment areas will be located, how services will be delivered, and what infrastructure is needed while exploring different growth scenarios.

The State Planning Commission (the Commission), supported by Planning and Land Use Services, is currently preparing six new regional plans for Kangaroo Island, Yorke and Mid North, Eyre and Western, Limestone Coast, Murray Mallee and Greater Adelaide.

In initiating the development of the new Murray Mallee Regional Plan, the Commission has identified that it will include:

  • a long-term vision for the region, along with supporting targets and actions for land use, transport infrastructure and the public realm
  • maps and spatial plans that are relevant to the vision and priorities
  • contextual information about the region, including forward projections and statistical data and analysis.
  • recommendations about the application of the Planning and Design Code in the region, including future zoning and infrastructure needs, and how land can be developed
  • identification of sufficient land to support housing diversity, affordable living and employment growth
  • clear principles for orderly development and the management of growth, including a hierarchy of plans to guide the form and intensity of settlements and the prioritisation of release of urban lands
  • a framework for the public realm or infrastructure located within the region
  • performance indicators and targets to measure success in implementing the plan.
