Draft NPWS Murray Mallee Fire Management Plan

Have your say on the draft fire management plan for land managed by National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) across the Murray Mallee.

What's being decided?

We are seeking public feedback on the Draft NPWS Murray Mallee Fire Management Plan, and the strategies identified to reduce bushfire risk, maintain and enhance biodiversity, and support bushfire suppression (firefighting).

All feedback will be collated, analysed and considered to develop the final fire management plan.

Background

NPWS develops fire management plans to guide strategic activities across the South Australian public lands it manages (parks, reserves and some Crown Land).

A plan has been drafted for the Murray Mallee region. The plan will replace existing NPWS Riverland and Murraylands fire management plans: Billiatt District, Bookmark Mallee, Ngarkat District; and a small portion of the NPWS Limestone Coast South East Fire Management Plan.

The draft plan has been written using input including feedback on existing plans from key stakeholders, local knowledge, learnings and new data to inform improvements.

The new plan forms part of NPWS’s strategic fire management framework and adopts a risk-based approach that prioritises the sites, assets and values most at risk, ensuring resources are directed where bushfires are likely to have the greatest impact.

Fire management plans are reviewed every five years to ensure strategies remain effective and align with each plan’s objectives. While they set a long-term vision (10 years), the plans are not static - they are designed to be flexible and responsive. This allows for updates as bushfire risks evolve or new information becomes available.

What are the next steps?

After all feedback has been carefully reviewed, the fire management plan will be finalised. The outcomes of this consultation and the final fire management plan will be available here and on the Department for Environment and Water website. Once approved and released, the plan will be reviewed every five years and updated as required, to ensure that the strategies are still appropriate to meet the plan’s aims.
