What is being decided?
A Park Management Plan (PDF 1.7MB) is being developed for the Nullarbor parks, which will set the vision for the area and how the vision will be achieved.
The Nullarbor Wilderness Protection Area, Nullarbor Regional Reserve and Nullarbor National Park form the Nullarbor parks and are the Country of the Mirning people who have held a connection to this Country for tens of thousands of years.
The Nullarbor parks are situated in the far west of South Australia, extending from the border with Western Australia east to near the Head of the Bight, north to the Trans-Australian Railway and south to the Southern Ocean.
The Nullarbor parks protect the South Australian section of the iconic Nullarbor Plain, the largest arid limestone karst system of caves, blowholes and rock holes and the longest southern facing cliffs in the world. The karst system includes Koonalda Cave where scientific discoveries changed the understanding of Aboriginal occupation in Australia. The findings proved that Aboriginal people had been in Australia for at least 20,000 years (rather than the earlier estimation of 7,000 years).
The parks also support a diverse range of flora and fauna, including the largest population of southern hairy-nosed wombats.
How can your input influence the decision?
The draft management plan addresses the most important issues facing the Nullarbor parks, focusing on four key themes:
Theme 1: Maintaining healthy Country
Theme 2: Keeping culture strong
Theme 3: Respecting and enjoying Country
Theme 4: Nullarbor Wilderness Protection Area Visitor Management Strategy
Your feedback will be taken into consideration by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources in finalising the Nullarbor Parks Draft Management Plan.
Submissions close on 27 January 2018.

To ensure your submission is effective:
- State that your submission refers to the Nullarbor Parks Draft Management Plan, as several plans may be open for feedback.
- Make your submission concise and clear.
- Refer to the page, section number, paragraph and/or objective or strategy upon which you are commenting.
- Identify aspects of the draft plan that you support, or do not support. Explain your reasons for disagreeing with the content of the draft plan and suggest alternatives.
- If you are commenting on the accuracy of background information, provide references for your information sources.
All feedback will be carefully reviewed and considered in finalising the management plan.
How will your input be used?
You will receive acknowledgement that your submission was received via return email or post.
The Nullarbor Parks Management Plan, together with the draft plan, all public submissions and a detailed analysis of submissions, will be forwarded to the Parks and Wilderness Council for its consideration and advice.
The plan, along with council’s advice will then be forwarded to the Minister for Sustainability, Environment and Conservation for consideration and adoption. Notice of the final plan’s adoption will be published in the Government Gazette and the final Nullarbor Parks Management Plan will be made available at environment.sa.gov.au/parkmanagement.
The Analysis of Submissions document will be released along with the final plan. This document details the comments raised, the response to those comments and whether any changes were made to the plan as a result of those comments.
