Background

In 2024, we published the report from the review of the Carers Recognition Act 2005 (SA) (the Act).

While we were reviewing the Act, the Commonwealth was also conducting an Inquiry into the recognition of unpaid carers and preparing the National Carers Strategy 2024-2034 and Action Plan 2024-2027.

We considered the State Report together with the report from the Commonwealth Inquiry and the National Carers Strategy to promote national consistency and simplify the policy landscape for South Australian carers.

This has resulted in the draft Carers Recognition (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill, which proposes to:

  1. Broaden and clarify the definition of ‘carer’.
  2. Broaden the scope of the Act’s obligations and reporting requirements.
  3. Introduce a requirement for the Act to be reviewed every five years.
