We’re keen to hear your views on ideas that will support a confident, innovative waste management sector and keep South Australia as a resource recovery leader.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has released a discussion paper on waste management reform options.

Reforming Waste Management – creating certainty for an industry to grow
(PDF, 3.2MB) focusses on the key issues faced by the waste management and resource recovery industry and reform options, including waste levy options, to assist in achieving a better and more equitable industry while reducing environmental risk and damage in a cost‑effective way. The paper also highlights a number of innovative change ideas for enhanced resource recovery in South Australia, introducing ideas relating to:

  • banning microplastics (microbeads) used in personal care and cosmetic products
  • banning polystyrene food packaging
  • ‘save as you throw’ waste pricing – recycle more and pay less
  • mandatory food waste recycling in the CBD

The discussion paper seeks your views on the many reform options and change ideas presented. You may choose to address all of the questions posed in the paper or focus on particular issues or options of interest to you.

The EPA is conducting community meetings across South Australia on behalf of the government as part of the consultation process. They will be held in Port Lincoln, Adelaide, Mt Gambier, Port Pirie, Davoren Park and Karoonda. Please RSVP to Trish Robjohns via 8204 2057 or email epainfo@epa.sa.gov.au.

    Consultation meetings regarding the reforms and ideas presented in the discussion paper will be held in Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Karoonda, Mt Gambier and Victor Harbor. To receive updates about consultation meeting details, register your interest here.
