The State Government has initiated an independent review of the State Records Act. The review is being undertaken to ensure the objects of the Act are being achieved and that it remains relevant to current practices and technologies across government. Retired District Court Judge, Mr Alan Moss, has been appointed to undertake the review.
The Act provides for the preservation and management of the official records of the South Australian public sector. This includes records held by State Government agencies, Local Government authorities and the three State universities.

The State Government has initiated an independent review of the State Records Act. The review is being undertaken to ensure the objects of the Act are being achieved and that it remains relevant to current practices and technologies across government. Retired District Court Judge, Mr Alan Moss, has been appointed to undertake the review.
The Act provides for the preservation and management of the official records of the South Australian public sector. This includes records held by State Government agencies, Local Government authorities and the three State universities.
The Act also establishes State Records of South Australia which is responsible for administering the Act. It is the custodian of the South Australian government archives, a large part of the official documentary heritage of the state, and provides public access to those records.
The Act has not been formally reviewed since its enactment in 1997. Significant technological development has occurred since that time and a vast amount of government business is now conducted online. The review will consider the extent to which the current legislative framework effectively achieves the Objects of the Act with particular consideration being given to electronic records. It will identify any gaps or issues that limit its effectiveness and look at how other jurisdictions have attempted to address similar issues.
