Have your say on draft amendments to the Southern Kangaroo Island Marine Park Management Plan.
What's being decided?
We want to hear your views on changes to the Southern Kangaroo Island Marine Park Management Plan.
The draft amendments:
- extend the eastern and western boundaries of the Seal Bay Sanctuary Zone by 18.4 km2, with the western extension expanding the boundary of the marine park across a small, privately owned part of Vivonne Bay
- introduce a special purpose area, which will allow shore-based fishing to continue within the extension area across Vivonne Bay.
Background
Home to iconic Seal Bay, the Southern Kangaroo Island Marine Park includes a range of animals and habitats that make this area a jewel of South Australia’s natural heritage.
The park lies along the southern coast of Kangaroo Island between D'Estrees Bay and the western end of Seal Bay Conservation Park. With deep-water reefs, exposed cliffs and rocky headlands the park features one of Australia’s most important breeding sites for Australian sea lions.
The Southern Kangaroo Island Marine Park Management Plan, adopted in 2012, is a strategic document that defines boundaries of various zones and special purpose areas, and sets out strategies to address management challenges.
The draft amendments have been developed following a government-led review of marine park sanctuary zones, an independent report and extensive stakeholder consultation.
