Training Learner Drivers: Your professional experience
Help shape the future of driver training in South Australia
What's being decided?
We are reviewing current driver training materials for Motor Driving Instructors and Class C (Car) learner drivers, such as the Driving Companion.
This review will ensure future training materials are inclusive, accessible and support those involved in training Class C learner drivers as they work towards their full licence.
We want to hear about your current experiences if you are a South Australian:
Licensed Motor Driving Instructor, or
Authorised Examiner appointed by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.
Our aim is to better understand the community’s needs and expectations regarding learner driver training to improve the training materials and driver training experiences. Who better to ask than those who use the current training materials and have professional insight into the driver training journey?
Your feedback is important to the outcomes of the review and will help us identify opportunities to improve future driver training experiences.
Complete our online survey, which asks about your experience using current driver training manuals for Class C licences and explores opportunities for improvement of future manuals.
It may take you up to 10 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous.
The survey closes on 23 November 2025.
By participating, you’re helping build a safer, fairer and more responsive driver training system that reflects the needs of all South Australians. Learn more about our proposed Driver Training Reform improvements.
What are the next steps?
We will consider your feedback to improve current Class C driver training materials and share an update of these resources on this site.

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us.
This survey will ask about your experience using the current Class C learner driver manuals designed to support you as you teach Learner drivers the skills to drive safely, and/or assess their driving skills; for example, what you like, what could be improved. These insights will help us to determine the best approach for developing future manuals as part of the Driver Training Reform.
The survey will ask about your experience using the following current Class C manuals:
Driving Companion (a booklet issued to learner drivers that contains essential information about the learner's permit and the graduated licensing scheme)
Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A) Manual (a structured guide for a progressive driving program that contains a list of tasks that must be successfully completed and signed off by an Authorised Examiner, which, upon completion, results in learner drivers achieving a Certificate of Competency without a final test)
Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) Manual (a guide on how to score learners during their 45-minute practical on-road driving assessment, supporting the authorised examiner in consistently testing the learner's ability to drive safely and competently)
The survey will take up to 10 minutes to complete, and your responses will be anonymous. You can withdraw from the survey at any time.
Your feedback will be used by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to explore opportunities to improve future experiences for yourself and others in the driver training industry.
Please note: Some of the questions about the use of manuals may not be relevant to you, but this online survey platform does not always allow us to filter these questions out appropriately. If this occurs, please select 'not applicable' on these questions so that you can continue through the survey. Apologies for the inconvenience.
