Consultation has concluded. Thanks for your contributions.

We are inviting you to tell us your ideas about the key issues affecting young people in South Australia.

What's being decided?

We are developing South Australia’s Youth Action Plan 2023-2026 to enhance fair and equitable access to opportunities, resources and supports for young people.

We invite all young people, stakeholder organisations and anyone with an interest in young people to tell us their ideas about the key issues affecting young people in South Australia.

Background

Young people hold the key to creating a better future and deserve to be taken seriously, listened to and included in important conversations.

Young people demonstrate many strengths – including creativity, resilience, empathy, independence, collaboration and innovation. However, there are also areas where we need to take action to ensure that all young people can flourish. We are proposing that SA’s Youth Action Plan has five key areas for action:

  1. Physical Health, and Social and Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health
  2. Safety and Justice
  3. Education and Employment
  4. Connections and Access to Resources
  5. Citizenship and Participation

What are the next steps?

We will collate, analyse and use your feedback to develop the final plan, which will then be submitted to the Minister for Human Services for adoption.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Youth Action Plan consultation.

A consultation report has been developed, and is available online: https://dhs.sa.gov.au/how-we-help/youth/sa-youth-action-plan.

  • Initial key themes identified through consultation to inform the South Australian Youth Action Plan

In July 2023, the South Australian Government launched public consultation on the South Australian Youth Action Plan, which had over 880 people engaged in consultation through a YourSAy survey, workshops and written submissions, 728 of these were young people.

The consultation covered many important topics, but six key themes were identified as being the most prevalent areas needing response:

    • Increased access to mental health support.
    • Increased connection to services and activities available in the young person’s community.
    • Increased access to sport and recreation activities.
    • Increased support with post-school pathways, including the teaching of ‘life skills’ and ‘how to adult’.
    • Improved access to housing and rental accommodation.
    • Include young people in decision making.

A full consultation report is in development and will be released later in 2023. This consultation is just the start of an ongoing process of active consultation and engagement with young people and youth stakeholders, as we develop and implement the South Australian Youth Action Plan.
