Is there any known Aboriginal heritage in the application area and how will this be managed?

In 2025 Aboriginal remains were discovered during construction works at 91 Batson Parade, Hindmarsh Island. All works have stopped until a decision is made on this application.

The area forms part of a culturally rich and diverse landscape that holds deep significance for the Ngarrindjeri people. It sits within the broader region known as the “Meeting of the Waters”, which includes the waters and submerged lands around Hindmarsh Island, the Murray Mouth, the Goolwa Channel, and the tidal reaches of nearby rivers and creeks. Hindmarsh Island is recognised as an important Ngarrindjeri cultural site.

If authorisation is given, Aboriginal heritage is proposed to be managed in accordance with the heritage methodology prepared by Stenhouse Heritage.

Any Aboriginal ancestral remains will be removed by a qualified archaeologist working in consultation with NAC‑nominated Ngarrindjeri Traditional Owners.

Any heritage removed will be securely stored on site under the care of Traditional Owners while further consultation occurs with NAC regarding whether reburial or return to the Aboriginal community is preferred. Where reburial is requested, the Applicant, through its archaeologist, will work closely with NAC to identify an appropriate location and a culturally respectful process.

Please refer to the Consultation Information Pack for further information about Aboriginal heritage and the Applicant’s proposed Aboriginal heritage management.
