Background

What is Arts and Cultural Tourism?

Arts and Cultural Tourism is a key element of the appeal of South Australia, along with Nature & Wildlife and Food & Wine.

Arts and Cultural Tourism can be defined as tourism activities, attractions and experiences that engage with arts and culture, including, but not limited to:

  • Aboriginal Experiences
  • Performing Arts
  • Museums, Galleries or Studios
  • Festivals and Cultural Events
  • History and heritage buildings or sites

Interacting with arts and culture can be either the primary tourism experience or an aspect of another tourism experience.

We are developing an Arts and Cultural Tourism Strategy to drive the sector through to 2025.

The Consultation Process

Extensive consultation across the Arts, Culture and Tourism industries is underway, with over 20 face to face consultation meetings having already occurred.

Additionally, on the 20th April, a forum was held at the Grainger Studios, attended by over 100 stakeholders, organised by Festival Adelaide, the Tourism Industry Council of South Australia and the Arts Industry Council of South Australia.

We will develop the draft Arts and Cultural Tourism Strategy using existing strategies, consumer insights, consultation meeting input, forum feedback and the survey contents

The draft Arts and Cultural Tourism Strategy will be available for public comment in June 2021. Once further feedback on this draft strategy is addressed, the final strategy will be launched in September 2021.

The Steering Committee

The Steering Committee overseeing the development of the strategy is comprised by representatives of the South Australian Tourism Commission and Arts SA.

Representation on the Steering Committee also includes Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation (Department of Premier and Cabinet) and Events South Australia.
