What is being decided?

Design quality is an essential component of the new Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016. This new legislation is set to significantly reform our planning system and provide a better focus on design quality.

The Design Guidelines are a practical tool to assist designers, planners, developers and consumers with the design of a range of residential developments, whether small, low-rise, medium or higher density.

What is the aim?

The Design Guidelines aim to support the delivery of well-designed higher density housing in metropolitan Adelaide and towns across South Australia. This will ensure new developments positively contribute to neighbourhoods and strengthen the character of our streets.

The Guidelines are intended to influence infill developments, such as townhouses or row housing. Importantly, the Guidelines emphasise the design principles and performance outcomes that should be considered in order to encourage good design outcomes in residential developments.

The Guidelines are arranged into six sections:

Context
Movement
Building Form
Open Space & Landscape
Building Design
Appearance

Each section has been expanded into related design elements that are described as Performance Outcomes and Design Suggestions.

The Design Guidelines were available for comment while this engagement was live.

We want to ensure the Guidelines are clear and easy to use, that the design guidance is appropriate and that your ideas on how we can continue to support well-designed housing in South Australia are heard.
