We would like feedback on the draft South Australia's Oral Health Plan. Have your say on the future of oral health in South Australia.

What is being decided?

Research has shown that good oral health is integral to good general health. Unfortunately socially disadvantaged groups are more likely to experience poorer oral health.

The Draft - SA Oral Health Plan aims to improve the oral health of all South Australians, in particular those at risk of poor oral health.

We have identified 6 goals, and with each goal there are a number of action areas outlined in the plan, that we would like you to consider:

  1. Oral Health Promotion and Prevention: All South Australians have access to oral health promoting environments and to appropriate evidence-based information and programs that support them to make informed decisions about their health.
  2. Accessible Oral Health Services: All South Australians have access to appropriate oral health care in a clinically appropriate timeframe.
  3. System Alignment and Integration: South Australian social, health and education systems work together to support healthy mouths and healthy lives.
  4. Safety and Quality: Oral Health services in South Australia are provided in accordance with the Australian Safety and Quality Goals for Health Care.
  5. Workforce Development: The South Australian oral health workforce is an appropriate composition and size and is appropriately trained and distributed.
  6. Research and Evaluation: Appropriate and timely data is available at both the population and service level for planning, monitoring and evaluation.

The Draft South Australia's Oral Health Plan (SAOHP) provides an overview of the oral health issues for the South Australian population and a framework for addressing these issues.

The inaugural South Australian Oral Health Plan expired at the end of 2017 and SA Dental Service has facilitated the consultation process and development of the next SAOHP.

Feedback from the June 2018 consultation paper was reviewed and used to inform the development of the draft SAOHP, guided by input from stakeholder representatives on the SAOHP Working Group.

The draft plan has now been approved by the Minister for Health and Wellbeing, and we invite you to be a part of this final consultation process by providing feedback on the draft SAOHP,

  • Outcome

After a review of feedback received, the finalised plan has now been released. The plan was launched on Thursday 10 October by Health Minister Wade.

The South Australian Oral Health Plan 2019 - 2026 is the South Australian Government framework for oral health action in South Australia for the next seven years. It provides an overview of the current oral health status of South Australians, including priority populations, and identifies key action areas to address the oral health needs of the population.

This Plan builds on both the foundations and achievements of the inaugural Plan released in 2010 and provides the South Australian context for the goals and principles of Healthy Mouths – Healthy Lives, Australia’s National Oral Plan 2015-2024.

A healthy mouth is fundamental to overall health, wellbeing and quality of life. It enables people to eat, speak and socialise without pain, discomfort or embarrassment. Poor oral health can interfere with daily function, impacts on social interactions and work productivity and is associated with a number of health problems and conditions.

Whilst oral health has improved in recent decades for many South Australians, the evidence shows there are still significant inequities in our community and areas of unmet need remain. The purpose of this Plan for the next seven years is to guide coordinated action that contributes to improved oral health.

The development of this Plan has incorporated two consultation phases which included the public as well as the dental, wider health and community sectors. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback and in doing so shaped and influenced the Plan. A monitoring group comprising representatives from key stakeholders, including community, will be established in the near future to advise on implementation of the Plan and track progress.
