Fire management plan reviews for the Mount Lofty Ranges and Fleurieu Peninsula

Consultation has concluded

We are seeking your feedback on the current Mount Lofty Ranges and Fleurieu Peninsula fire management plans to guide improvements.

What's being decided?

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is reviewing and redeveloping the current fire management plans for the Mount Lofty Ranges and Fleurieu Peninsula. We want to update fire management strategies to better reduce risk to communities, biodiversity and property from bushfires.

We will draft two new plans for all land managed by the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) in these areas. These plans will replace the five existing NPWS fire management plans:

  • Hills Face Zone
  • Onkaparinga Valley
  • Southern Foothills
  • South Para Collaborative
  • South-Western Fleurieu Peninsula.

We are seeking feedback from external stakeholders to ensure the new plans are comprehensive and effective.

Background

The Mount Lofty Ranges and Fleurieu Peninsula are regions with significant biodiversity and communities that are vulnerable to bushfires. The current fire management plans set strategic priorities about where, how, and why we need to undertake activities to reduce the risk of bushfire and manage the environment. However, some of the plans are now outdated, and do not reflect changes in the landscape or the latest fire management knowledge and science.

The review aims to:

  • enhance the placement of fire management zones,
  • recommend improvements for fire access and infrastructure (e.g., water sources), and,
  • identify policies to reduce risks to park staff and visitors.

The plans also identify strategies to maintain and enhance ecological values within reserves.

Note that these plans do not identify where individual prescribed burns are planned. For more information on fire management planning in parks, visit the Department for Environment and Water website.
