The original engagement below was seeking nominations to fill four vacant positions on the Minister’s Recreational Fishing Advisory Council (MRFAC).

What's being decided?

The Minister's Recreational Fishing Advisory Council (MRFAC) plays a vital role in helping to shape South Australia’s recreational fishing future, representing the interests of fishers and providing advice and feedback to the Government of South Australia in all matters that relate to recreational fishing.

Elections are now being held to add four members to the MRFAC with expertise in recreational fishing, including at least one member from the South East region.

As part of this process, nominations are now open for the election and all South Australian recreational fishers with an interest in the future management of the fishery are encouraged to apply.

What you need to know

  • Fishers interested in one of the four membership positions on the MRFAC should read the Nomination handbook and nominate via the online application form below.
  • At least one South East representative will be elected through this process.
  • Members will be appointed for a two-year term.
  • Members should be prepared to act in the best interests of the fishery as a whole, rather than as an advocate for any particular organisation, interest group or region.
  • No remuneration will be payable for members to attend MRFAC meetings; however, reasonable travel expenses will be considered for regional participants.

Background

The MRFAC is an advisory group that directly engages with the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development on recreational fishing issues.

It was established in 2018 to ensure the broader views of recreational fishers were represented in a more united way.

Guided by an independent chair, the MRFAC works with the Minister to meet the needs and interests of recreational fishers, and provide feedback and advice on recreational fishing development, initiatives, and policies.

In July 2021, the MRFAC delivered the Recreational Fishing Strategy for South Australia, 2021 to 2024 which focuses on both short and medium-term outcomes for the recreational fishing sector to increase stewardship, sustainability and security.

What are the next steps?

Following the nomination period, applications will be reviewed by a panel formed by the Minister to ensure candidates meet the selection criteria, and then eligible candidates will be put forward for a public vote.

The MRFAC election will be conducted in two stages: nominations and voting.

Voting for candidates will open in October

After the count has been completed, successful candidates will be notified and the new MRFAC members will be announced.
