Food & Our Future - Ensuring healthy, affordable food for all South Australians!

Consultation has concluded

How can we help improve your food security?

What's being decided?

We want to understand what would help ensure that everyone in South Australia can access sufficient, safe and healthy food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences.

We are inviting you to share your experiences by reflecting on the following questions:

  • Have you experienced food insecurity?
  • Have you seen others in your community experience food insecurity?
  • How has this impacted on you or others?
  • What should be done about it?
  • What ideas do you have?
  • What would help you or your community?

The South Australian Council for Social Services (SACOSS) will help us connect and engage with the community about this issue.

Background

Access to healthy food is central to our health and wellbeing. When we can't access adequate healthy food this can result in obesity and diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

"Food security" exists when all people, at all times, can access sufficient, safe and healthy food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences. However, several people in South Australia are experiencing food insecurity. In 2023, 16% of people surveyed though a South Australian survey, reported being food insecure (with or without hunger). Broader Australian data also tells us that for many people, food insecurity is a long-term issue (ie longer than 1 year).

Supporting the creation of alternative food systems that support everyone to get healthy and culturally appropriate food in a dignified way will help reduce the extent of chronic health conditions.

Preventive Health SA and the Department of Human Services want to understand how people are experiencing this problem and what would help them, to make sure we pursue the best solutions.

  • This survey seeks to understand your personal experience, either with challenges you may have faced yourself with accessing the food you or your family need and/ or challenges you may have noticed others experiencing.

The survey should only take approximately 5-10min depending on how much information you are comfortable sharing with us.
