We want your feedback on the current health care services in the Barossa and surrounding areas to help us shape the future of health service delivery in the area.
What’s being decided?
The State Government is committed to ensuring the Barossa community has the health services it needs.
We are looking at what the future of the Barossa health services looks like by investigating the need for and viability of a new hospital as a hub for health services in the Barossa.
Feedback from the community and relevant stakeholders will help identify the health services that will best support the health care system in the Barossa and most benefit the community. Key findings will inform the development of the Barossa Hospital Business Case.
The initial consultation process will occur in two stages:
- Stage one involves inviting feedback from the Barossa and surrounding communities about health needs and priorities.
This stage will build on the service planning done in recent years, examine the types and amounts of services that need to be provided in the region, take into account the staffing and systems required, and consider key relationships with other hospitals and health services.
A key part of this stage will be activity and service profiling for health services in the Barossa which will be complete by the end of 2019. - Stage two involves the development of the Barossa Hospital Business Case, expected to be completed by early 2020.

- Health Advisory Councils
- Barossa Hills Fleurieu LHN staff
- Local doctors

- Other service providers in the region
- Universities
- Local councils
- Potential partners
- Industrial bodies
Your feedback will help to shape the activity and service profile and ultimately, the future of healthcare in the Barossa.
What are the next steps?
Following the consultation, we will collate the feedback and responses as we finalise the activity and service profile (Stage one) for the Barossa, expected to be released by the end of 2019.
The activity and service profile will inform the development of the Barossa Hospital Business Case (Stage two), expected to be completed by early 2020.
We will provide a summary of community feedback, and how this feedback has been used, which will be available on this site for review throughout the process.
If the need is found to build a new hospital, if it is supported by stakeholders and the community and it is shown to be cost-effective; the Barossa Hills Fleurieu LHN will use the business case to seek funding from the State Government to build the facility.

Why is the new business case being developed?
The State Government is committed to ensuring the Barossa community has the health services it needs. To that end, the Government has funded the development of a business case to investigate the need for and viability of a new hospital as a hub for health services in the Barossa.
The Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN) will lead the development of the business case.
Potential benefits of building a new hospital include:
- Enabling new service types, new models of care and more patient-centred services
- Ensuring facilities continue to meet higher safety and quality standards
- Expanding capacity to meet increased demand for existing service types
- Replacing assets to avoid increasingly high infrastructure sustainment costs
- Delivering cost efficiencies through higher occupancy, improved ward configurations and economies of scale
- Reducing pressure on the SA Ambulance Service (SAAS), Gawler Health Service and metropolitan hospitals
- Supporting more sustainable workforce arrangements.
All feedback received from the community and stakeholders will be considered for the development of the Barossa Hospital Business Case.
