What's being decided?

The Heritage Standard for the Beltana State Heritage Area, on the western fringe of the Flinders Ranges, will ensure that future development in the area protects the identified heritage values. The State Heritage Area includes the township and the nearby cemetery and railway structures.

Once approved, the final Heritage Standard will be used by Heritage South Australia in the Department for Environment and Water to guide development decisions in the Beltana State Heritage Area.

Your feedback will help inform the final Heritage Standard for the Beltana State Heritage Area.

Background

We’re developing Heritage Standards for South Australia’s State Heritage Areas to ensure that each area has a guideline that is fit for purpose, is consistent with the Planning and Design Code and reflects each area’s Statement of Heritage Significance.

The new Heritage Standard for Beltana will replace its existing Guidelines for Development document (2018).

The Beltana State Heritage Area is recognised as playing an important role in the history and development of South Australia’s inland regions. The area has cultural heritage value to Aboriginal Australians and Australians of European and Afghan descent. The Heritage Standard includes:

  • A description of the heritage features of the Beltana State Heritage Area.
  • How the heritage values of properties, open spaces and the character of the area can be managed.

The Heritage Standard will:

  • Guide Heritage South Australia in assessing development applications that may impact on the heritage values of the area.
  • Provide advice to property owners planning to restore, alter or develop their property within the State Heritage Area.
