Mount Remarkable Management Plan Amendments

Help create greater visitor facilities and services at Mount Remarkable National Park

What's being decided?

We want to hear your views on proposed changes to the Mount Remarkable National Park Management Plan to allow for the development of greater visitor facilities and services.

Your feedback will help shape how the park is managed into the future.

Background

One of the Parks 2025 projects announced by the South Australian Government is to establish a new adventure based tourism destination for South Australia in the Southern Flinders Ranges.

Mount Remarkable National Park will benefit from this project through the development of new hiking and mountain bike trails, and the upgrading of existing infrastructure. Some of this work is already underway.

To implement the full suite of proposed projects and create greater adventure based tourism opportunities, the Management Plan for the park requires amendment. Management plans are the main strategic documents that guide how parks are managed in South Australia.

Proposed changes to the Mount Remarkable National Park management plan include:

  • broadening the areas where cycling tracks may be developed
  • making allowances for guided 4WD tours under certain circumstances
  • providing principles for ecologically sustainable tourism accommodation developments.

Changes are also recommended regarding the management of an overpopulation of kangaroos in Mount Remarkable National Park. Under the proposed amendments, management of kangaroos may include culling where that is the only practicable method of control.

The amendments aim to facilitate ecologically sensitive development while protecting existing park values. Your views are sought on these changes to ensure all issues are considered and park values are protected.
