What's being decided?

In order to strengthen the conservation and biodiversity values of the existing Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert Regional Reserve and Conservation Park, plans are underway to reclassify the area as a national park.

We want to hear your views on the draft management plan for the proposed Munga-Thirri—Simpson Desert National Park.

Your feedback will help shape how the park is managed once the park is proclaimed.

Background

Proclamation is expected to occur in December 2021. Once proclaimed, the Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert National Park will be Australia’s largest national park at 3.6 million hectares in size.

Under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, a park management plan needs to be prepared as soon as practicable following the creation of a new park. A draft plan has been prepared, and can be viewed under the ‘Documents’ heading on this page.

After consultation has concluded, the draft management plan for the new national park will supersede the current management plan for the Regional Reserve and Conservation Park.

The new proposed management plan is much the same as the existing plan for the Regional Reserve and Conservation Park, but includes additional protection for the environmentally significant Kallakoopah Creek.

The final plan will be adopted after the national park is proclaimed later this year, and all views received have been considered. Once adopted, the plan will also be available on this page.
