Consultation has concluded

You can help improve palliative care in South Australia by giving feedback on our draft strategic framework.

What's being decided?

In partnership with individuals and organisations, we have developed a draft Palliative Care Strategic Framework 2021-2026. The framework identifies key priorities and actions to improve the way palliative care is planned and delivered care over the next 5 years in South Australia.

The framework prioritises:

  • increasing community awareness, understanding and engagement with end of life matters
  • improving access to palliative care, particularly for underserved populations
  • enhancing collaboration and coordination of palliative care
  • improving the collection, measurement and reporting of data regarding palliative care

We want your views on the key priorities and opportunities to improve palliative care in South Australia.

Background

Palliative care helps people to live their life as fully and as comfortably as possible when living with a life-limiting or terminal illness.

Palliative care identifies and treats symptoms that may be physical, emotional, spiritual or social. It is person-centred care that is based on each person’s unique needs and extends to support and care for family and other carers.

The need for palliative care services in South Australia is increasing due to an ageing population and an increase in the number of people living with chronic disease and life-limiting illness.

The draft Framework provides a roadmap to improve support for people at the end-of-life through to bereavement.

The draft Framework has been developed by SA Health in consultation with clinicians and the community to improve the quality of life and experience of dying for people with a life-limiting illness.

There is currently a range of work underway across public, non-government and private palliative care sectors and this is recognised within the Framework. It proposes priorities and approaches for palliative care across the state. The Framework will assist us in developing a new Palliative Care Services Plan.
