We want to hear your feedback on the draft South Australian Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy 2024-2030.

What's being decided?

Preventive Health SA is developing the South Australian Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy 2024-2030 which aims to prevent and reduce the harms caused by alcohol and other drugs in the South Australian community.

The Strategy is part of a group of global, national, and state policies, legislation and other strategies to guide action on alcohol and other drugs. It focusses on five priority areas:

  1. Health promotion and prevention
  2. Disruption and supply reduction
  3. Early and targeted intervention
  4. Treatment and support
  5. Engaging communities.

We are seeking community feedback on the draft Strategy, and in particular from the following groups:

  • current and former alcohol and other drug users and their families and support networks
  • people working in organisations to support current and former alcohol and other drug users and their families
  • anyone who identifies with one or more of the identified priority population groups
  • anyone who has an interest in the reduction and prevention of alcohol and drug-related harms, along with community feedback in general.

Background

The draft Strategy has been informed by contributions from experts in the alcohol and other drug field, key government and non-government stakeholders and analysis of peer-reviewed literature and developments in other Australian jurisdictions.

While this Strategy is for the whole community, it acknowledges that alcohol and drug-related harms are not experienced equally across populations, and that these harms may be exacerbated by disadvantage and stigma.

The Strategy includes additional activity within each action area to reduce the inequities experienced by some priority populations, including those that intersect:

  • Aboriginal people
  • Children and young people
  • Parents who use alcohol and other drugs
  • Rural and remote communities
  • LGBTQIA+ people
  • People with comorbidity of mental health
  • Males aged 15-44
  • People in contact with the criminal justice system.

The 2024-2030 Strategy builds on the learnings from the previous 2017-2021 Strategy and is consistent with a nationally agreed harm minimisation framework.
