How accessible and inclusive is South Australia Police (SAPOL) for LGBTIQA+ people in South Australia?

What's being decided?

SAPOL is reviewing the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officer program, commonly known as GLLOs.

We are committed to providing services that are accessible to all South Australians, while being inclusive in our delivery of those services.

We are carrying out this review to ensure the GLLO network is visible, inclusive and accessible.

We are also undertaking a review of our training to develop staff knowledge and to ensure a better understanding of issues and/or barriers faced by members of the LGBTIQA+ community.

In conducting our review, we want to hear from the community so that we can better understand how we can enhance service delivery through the GLLO network. SAPOL has been working hard to make its services more accessible and inclusive, but we know we can do more and we need your help to do better.

Background

The GLLO network was originally established to:

• Support the fair and equitable delivery of policing services to the LGBTIQ community.
• Improve community safety by working in partnership with the LGBTIQ community.
• Offer additional support to victims of crime from the LGBTIQ community.
• Contribute to the development of mutual trust between police and LGBTIQ community.

An LGBTIQ Community Advisory Report by South Australia Rainbow Advocacy Alliance in 2021 recommended that SAPOL:

• Review the model, implementation and promotion of the SA Police Gay and Lesbian Liaison Program (GLLO).

This consultation forms part of a review and reflects SAPOL’s commitment to providing an inclusive service.

Who do we want to hear from?

• Someone who identifies as part of the South Australian LGBTIQA+ community
• A family member or friend of someone who identifies as part of the South Australian LGBTIQA+ community
• A service provider, supporter or advocate for someone who identifies as part of the South Australian LGBTIQA+ community; or
• Someone from the wider South Australian community with an interest in the topic

What we would like you to do

If you have a story (an experience) to tell us about engaging with the GLLO network, then we want to hear it.

We would like to hear stories of great service and positive experiences with the GLLO network.

We would also like to hear stories where you feel you have experienced poor service, poor attitudes or about barriers you have encountered when engaging or attempting to engage with the GLLO network.

The survey questions should only take a few minutes to complete, but you can take as long as you like.

We have asked some specific questions but would also like to hear your stories. We have included space at the end of the form for you to tell us the stories you would like to share, whether your own story or about someone else.
