WHY DO WE NEED A NEW STRATEGY?

Our workplaces are evolving with working from home and hybrid working becoming much more commonplace. There have been other significant changes from when the previous national strategy and our own public sector strategy were established, such as the emergence of mental health as a critical issue. We must respond to these in setting our directions for the years ahead.

WHAT OTHER BENEFITS WILL THERE BE?

Developing a new strategy gives the sector an opportunity to consider how we want to work together, how to improve consistency and minimise duplication. It also gives us an opportunity to consider the priorities going forward.

HOW HAS THE DRAFT STRATEGY BEEN PUT TOGETHER?

OCPSE engaged Kindling Solutions to assist us in developing the draft strategy. They conducted an environmental scan to understand current performance, issues and trends. Kindling Solutions also undertook a consultation process to hear views from across the sector which included surveys and workshops with key stakeholders as well as meetings with regulators and sponsors.

HOW WILL THE EFFECTS OF THE STRATEGY BE MEASURED?

Measurement is an integral part of this strategy through the key enabler of continuous improvement through data. A tiered approach is proposed with a range of measures developed to help understand the safety risks we face, and how agencies and the sector are performing in various aspects of safety, wellbeing and injury management.

Measures will also provide information on the effectiveness of the work in focus areas identified in the strategy. These will be monitored throughout the life of the strategy as required.  In some cases, the data for these measures will need to be established, and so will be phased in across the duration of the strategy.

    WILL THERE BE TARGETS?

Yes, there will be a small number of targets established to align to the National Safety Strategy and other important initiatives.

Performance reporting will also incorporate a range of other measurements that will not have set targets to provide more deeper analysis and insight into the drivers of results. These will be developed throughout the life of the strategy to provide more flexibility to respond to current and evolving needs.

    HOW WILL WE BENCHMARK PERFORMANCE?

The strategy has a focus area of improving sector wide analytical and reporting tools that will include the development of benchmarking capability.  This will enable the public sector and agencies to compare performance against other jurisdictions and like agencies. Stakeholders will be consulted during the development phase to ensure it meets their requirements.
