How can we improve the Teachers Registration Act, to make sure the profession continues to maintain its high standards?

What is being decided?

The Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 (the Act) provides a framework for the promotion and oversight of the teaching profession in South Australia. The purpose of the Act is to ensure every teacher working in South Australia is appropriately qualified, competent to teach and a fit and proper person to have the care for children and young people.

The Act establishes the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia and provides it with the functions and powers it needs to administer and oversee the registration of over 35,000 teachers across the state in both government and non-government schools and early childhood services

We are reforming the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 to ensure the act is providing the best framework for maintaining a high quality teaching profession and we would like know how you think we could improve the teacher registration process.

Purpose of the reform

The Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 (the Act) has not been subject to significant legislative review or amendment since it began in 2005. It is time to consider whether the Act continues to provide the best possible framework for a high quality teaching profession in South Australia.

The outcome of a recent national review of teacher registration has just been released and this, coupled with the growing interest in lifting educational outcomes for children by improving teacher quality, and the changing landscape of child protection legislation has prompted the need to review and reform South Australia's teacher registration legislation.

To help you consider the current issues, the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia has prepared a discussion paper which sets out some of the main features of the current Act, issues associated with its operation, relevant recommendations of the national review, and options for change.
