Urrbrae Agricultural High School Oval Redevelopment
What's being decided?
We are proposing to upgrade the Urrbrae Agricultural High School Oval and its supporting facilities to benefit the school community, enhance inclusivity in girls’ and women's football, and provide additional infrastructure for training and games for the Sturt Football Club.
This consultation seeks to hear your feedback on how this upgrade can best meet the needs of students, community members, and sporting groups.
Background
The proposed redevelopment of the Urrbrae Agricultural High School Oval promises to create a vibrant sporting hub benefitting students, local families, and the wider community.
This initiative is part of the Department for Education's commitment to unlocking school facilities as valuable community assets.
The redevelopment centres on two major stages:
Stage 1: Oval upgrades, including sports lighting, new goalposts and protective behind-goal netting.
Stage 2: Construction of a modern pavilion featuring changerooms, a multipurpose education room, storage spaces, umpire and student amenities, kiosk, coaching boxes, undercover spectator areas and interchange shelter.
This project is supported by external funding and partnerships with the Australian Government, South Australian Government, South Australian National Football League (SANFL), the Sturt Football Club and the Australian Football League.
Why is this redevelopment important?
Enhanced facilities will:
- Elevate the student experience of the sports, fitness, and outdoor education curriculum.
- Anchor the Urrbrae Agricultural High School Oval as an inclusive community hub for sports and recreation.
- Encourage wider participation in sports, particularly for young people, through enhanced access to safe, modern facilities.
- Support the Sturt Football Club's women’s men’s, and junior teams, strengthening grassroots sports engagement.
The redevelopment proposal is part of the broader Active School Communities initiative, through which the Department for Education partners with state sporting organisations and community groups to achieve shared goals in education and community health and wellbeing through grassroots sports.
As the school is located on land which is subject to the Waite Trust, legislation will be required to amend the terms of the Trust to:
- Enable development of the new facilities by the Sturt Football Club
- Allow for a long-term use agreement for the Sturt Football Club to make use of the oval and associated facilities at specified times outside of school hours.
