What’s being decided?

We have been working with young people and state government agencies to design a Youth Action Plan (2020-2022) called the ‘Strong Futures SA Youth Action Plan'.

In 2019, during Stage One, we established a Youth Panel which helped design the three-year Youth Action Plan with other young people and representatives from government and non-government organisations.

The draft Youth Action Plan - Strong Futures - proposes projects that have the capacity to bring government and non-government contributors together to achieve the best outcomes for young South Australians on the issues that most concern them or that they are most passionate about.

Now, during Stage Two, we are seeking feedback on the delivery of the proposed Strong Futures Projects of the draft Youth Action Plan.

If you are:

  • a South Australian aged between 12 to 30 years, or,
  • an entity that delivers outcomes for young people in the community, private or government sectors (outside of state government).

We want to hear your thoughts on the Strong Futures Projects and particularly on how we can involve young people and those who work with them, on the delivery of these projects.

How can your input influence the decision?

The Strong Futures Projects and ongoing actions detailed in the draft Youth Action Plan will be reviewed every year. Your ongoing feedback will be a valuable contribution to shaping the plan as it progresses.

What are the next steps?

The final Youth Action Plan 2020-2022 and supporting website will be launched during SA Youth Week in April 2020.

The Government of South Australia has been developing a Youth Action Plan that represents our investment in the best outcomes for all young South Australians (12-24 years). The final Youth Action Plan will outline a number of new cross-government collaborative projects (known as Strong Futures Projects) and the agencies who will work together on these emerging projects..

The Youth Action Plan has been developed in two major stages. Stage One in 2019 involved the following actions:

January - March 

We reviewed the consultations representing the voices of 6,000+ young people to identify draft focus areas.

April - July

We started initial testing of focus areas with 47 young people during SA Youth Week. 150 young people also provided broad feedback on focus areas during our YourSAy consultation.

August

45 young people from across the state participated in a Youth Panel to inform the vision and priorities of the draft Youth Action Plan.

July - October

In addition, a Cross-government Task Group formed to oversee the development of the Youth Action Plan. Six young people from the Youth Panel joined the Task Group. The Task Group mapped current agency investment in young people and identified partnership opportunities to further outcomes.

October

The first framework draft including potential new projects was presented to state government agencies.

November - December

The framework was refined and put forward all proposed projects. We also mapped all draft actions to the Child Development Council’s Outcomes Framework for Children and Young People.

Stage Two is now underway. Recognising the scale of current work that already responds to the needs and aspirations of young South Australians, the final section of the draft Youth Action Plan reflects actions already in progress and agreed to by government agencies.

More information about these actions, along with their matching initiatives, will be promoted in the final Plan and supporting website.

We especially want to hear about how young people and the community, private or government sectors (outside of state government) could be involved in the delivery of the proposed collaborative Strong Futures Projects in the draft Youth Action Plan.

    Strong Futures: SA Youth Action Plan 2020-2022 was launched on Friday 17 April 2020 at the start of SA Youth Week.

    We will facilitate ongoing engagement with young people across all stages of the Plan and will report back on the Plan’s progress annually to the Social Affairs Cabinet Committee.

    Below is a snapshot of the draft Strong Futures SA Youth Action Plan, including both the priority areas and the proposed Strong Futures Projects.

    The Department of Human Services will lead the co-design of specific projects with other government agencies under each focus area. Projects and outcomes will be reviewed annually which allows for projects to adapt and evolve as the plan is implemented.

    Priority Area 1

    Earn and Learn - Young South Australians are ready for work and life

    Young South Australians have the necessary life skills and supports to complete school and transition confidently to further education and training or to meaningful employment. They can successfully build vocational pathways that reflect the changing world of work. They are financially resilient and confident in their future.

    Strong Futures Project 1: Build the foundation skills and participation of young people not in full-time work and or/study

    Fair and Inclusive - Young South Australians are included and reach their potential

    Young South Australians feel confident to explore their personal potential and to access opportunities and supports regardless of race, age, gender identity, location or ability.

    Strong Futures Project 2: Grow opportunities for young people to engage in intercultural understanding and respect for the histories, cultures and languages of Aboriginal communities

    Young South Australians are safe, healthy and resilient. They have a strong sense of culture and identity. They have confidence and agency in the future of South Australia and the planet.

    Strong Futures Project 5: Invest in prevention approaches that tackle the key issues affecting young people’s wellbeing

    Focus areas include:

    • address the drivers of violence against women
    • reduce problem gambling harm and improve financial literacy
    • promote help-seeking and reduce stigma
    • support positive mental, social and physical health
    • promote social inclusion and improve suicide prevention

    Strong Futures Project 6: Invest in providing the right information to young people, through the right means, at the right time

    For example, work with young people to review current government service information

    For example, youth representation on climate change initiatives
